We play a few more rounds, and then Gabriella asks, “Do you want to watch me jump from up there at the top of the twisty pole?”

“No,” Cam, Nell, and I say in unison.

“Jinx!” the little sister bellows. “You are a coat!”

The three of us laugh, but Gabriella throws her hands in the air. “It’s Coke, Chloe. You owe me a Coke!”

But Chloe is galloping around and shouting, “Coat! Coat! Coat! You are a coat!”

I’m having fun and have forgotten what even brought us here in the first place until I see a panicked-looking teenager running from the restaurant parking lot. Her face is flushed, and she comes to a halt at the edge of the playground. “Are you the Winthrops? I’m so sorry I’m late!” She scans our group and says, “Wait, am I babysitting all of you? I thought there were only three.”

Cam, Nell, and I all look at one another. “Gotta go!” I say to the kids, and we run to our bikes.

“Bye!” Gabriella waves after us. “Thanks for playing!”

“Come back soon!” the little boy calls.

“You are a coat!” Chloe hollers.
